How I can help you

Hi, my name is Rachel and I live in Greater London. In 2006 my husband died suddenly. I was 36 years old at the time and our children were only 10 and 14 years old.

I felt overwhelmed, scared, and completely lost. I sought counselling at the time, and it became apparent very early on that I had not allowed myself to grieve the death of my mother when I was 18 years old or to grieve other significant losses in my childhood and adulthood.

Emotional pain and Sadness
Whilst the counselling was immensely helpful, I was still left with a great deal of emotional pain and sadness that impacted on my life in so many ways.

In February 2017 I came across the Grief Recovery Method through my work as a trustee for a Young Carers Charity, and I completed the 1-1 programme with a Grief Recovery Specialist. The programme provided so many lightbulb moments, it was a safe space to really explore what grief recovery meant, to believe in the possibility that I could hold onto fond memories and let go of the emotional pain.
A Transformational Programme
It transformed the way I thought about my own experiences of grief and loss enabling me to be honest about the pain that I was holding onto. Grief Recovery meant I could begin to claim my own circumstances instead of my life experiences claiming me and my happiness. I realised I didn’t need to be fixed but I did need to feel heard. I knew once I’d finished the programme that at some point in the future, I wanted to be able to help other people recover from bereavement and significant emotional losses.

Through my own personal experiences and through my work as a social worker I have come across so many adults and children for whom loss has impacted on their physical and emotional wellbeing. I also knew that I had to continue to work on my own losses by using the tools that I had learnt so I would be able to help other people. Four years on from completing the Grief Recovery programme, in July 2021 I qualified as a Grief Recovery Specialist. My passion is to help adults who have been impacted by grief to effect positive change in their own lives, and to help any adult who comes into contact with a child the tools to help children to develop a lifelong healthy response to loss.

So how does it work?
The Grief Recovery Method is not counselling or therapy, it is an education programme. The 1-1 programme (either face to face or online) is a step-by-step, week-by-week process and toolkit that can help you not only heal your hurt but help you be equipped to face any future losses. The process will allow you to let go of the 'if only, and why’ thoughts.

I will listen to you as you share your story, without judgement, analysis, or criticism. The Helping children with loss group programme provides you or your organisation with an opportunity to consider how to help children whose losses are inevitably having an impact on them reaching their potential. The structured steps and toolkit will allow you to successfully guide a child through their loss journey; whether that loss is caused by bereavement, separation from their family, or any number of other losses.

Please contact me for a no obligation chat, we can talk through the programmes I offer, and talk about whether you feel I can support you on your Grief Recovery journey.

Over 40+ life losses can leave us feeling bereft

When we think of bereavement, we usually think of the death of a loved one. Most people looking for bereavement counselling or a grief coach only feel entitled to do so if someone close to them has died.

However there are over 40 different personal losses that can leave us feeling devastated, heartbroken, lost, hopeless and ultimately cause the same emotional and physical symptoms of grief.

The Grief Recovery Method is unique in that it is applicable to any and all kinds of loss. Each Certified Grief Recovery Specialist has been trained to guide grievers without judgement, criticism or analysis. We do not compare losses and we know that every griever is unique.

Not only can the action steps within the Grief Recovery Method be applied to any type of loss, they can be used again and again with any future losses that occur - once you have participated in a Programme, you will have all the tools you need to cope with loss later in life.
